Lo scopo dell' indicatore On-Balance Volume consiste nel confermare il trend o individuare i possibili punti di inversione.

Conferma del trend:

Un trend al rialzo si verifica quando l'indicatore sale;
Un trend al ribasso si verifica quando l'indicatore scende.

Segnali di divergenza:

OBV che sale mentre i prezzi scendono indica un possibile indebolimento del trend al ribasso;
OBV che scende mentre i prezzi salgono indica un possibile indebolimento del trend al rialzo.

t – periodo attuale;
t-1 – periodo precedente;
C – prezzo di chiusura;
Vol – volume.
